What is the course about?

This course is designed to consolidate the linguistic competence you acquired during your previous French upper intermediate courses. It is an opportunity for you to further your knowledge of the French language using authentic material for an in-depth look at French society and an introduction to French literature.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Themes: cinema, customs and traditions, science and technology, art, literature, social issues, current affairs.

Revision of grammar in context (e.g. past tenses, subjunctive, conditional, prepositions as appropriate). Work on pronunciation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use the language more accurately
- read newspapers and short stories with confidence
- write short essays
- take part in discussions and debates
- talk about French culture
- give presentations in French.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable if you have done a French 4: module 1 course or have recently done five years of French, have acquired an upper intermediate level and want to move on to an advanced level.

It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology (e.g. the subjunctive, the conditional, direct and indirect speech, pronouns).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide or at http://www.citylit.ac.uk/self-assess-your-level.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Material will be provided by the tutor. Students might be advised to get a particular French grammar book and vocabulary book during the first session.

Julie Ricci

Bonjour! My name is Julie and I am from Nice, Côte d'azur. I have been teaching French in the UK since 2005 so it has been... a while. I started in Edinburgh, Scotland, where I graduated with an MCs in Language Teaching form the University of Edinburgh, and taught at Edinburgh Napier University and at the University of Edinburgh Life Long learning school. I then came to London where I started teaching at Citylit in 2011. I was also a French teacher at Queen Mary University of London for 7 seven years. I enjoy teaching languages and am very passionate to share and transmit my passion for my language. I make a point to create a relaxed atmosphere in my class, but I am very organised. So fear not! With me you will learn and have fun at the same time! I hope to see you soon in class. A bientôt!
