This is an intensive programme for beginners to German, with the emphasis on developing your speaking and listening skills. Suitable for complete beginners. Based on Willkommen Chapters 1-6 (Hodder Arnold). Please, feel free to enrol in week 2. There will be consolidation in week 2.

What is the course about?

The course aims to enable students to communicate with some fluency in a range of everyday situations. 3 hours per week over 12 weeks.

What will we cover?

Based on Willkommen units 1-6 and additional material supplied by the tutor. Greetings and introductions, exchanging personal information, speaking about leisure pursuits and the family, asking the way, doing some food shopping and ordering food in a café, booking a hotel room.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-use numbers and the alphabet

-greet others, introduce yourself and give personal information (address, age, profession, study, nationality)

-speak about leisure pursuits and say how often you do things

-speak about family relationships

-identify places in a town or city and ask for directions

-order food in a cafe and ask/give prices

-tell the time and days of the week and book a hotel room

-have a basic knowledge of personal pronouns, possessive adjectives, genders and articles, plurals, the accusative, verb endings, irregular verbs, separable verbs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 1 course - no previous knowledge of German required.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

German beginners: module 3 or German beginners intensive: modules 3+4 . Please enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
