What is the course about?

We will be looking at challenges singers might face when singing in German and work on a singer's pronunciation of a couple of German art songs to do with springtime. We will also learn the music for the songs and sing them together.

What will we cover?

We will be looking at the characteristics of the German language and analyse sung German by listening to a couple of German spring songs. There will be plenty of practice of sounds specific to the German language both speaking text and singing a few songs.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use sounds specific to sung German with increased confidence
- improve your pronunciation when singing in German
- have a better insight in challenges faced by non German singers
-sing the songs featured in the course, with an improved pronunciation and some understanding of the musical features.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for learners at all levels and the way the songs are approached will be adjusted to meet the needs of the students present on the day.
You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) .

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Pronunciation of challenging sounds will be practiced together and individual students will be encouraged to read out anpart of a song, should they want to.We will be looking at the characteristics of the German language and practice pronouncing them in spoken language first. We will then put the sounds into practice when singing the songs.
For each song, a YouTube clip, the sheet music and a translation will be posted on Google classroom prior to the class.A handout giving an overview of German sounds and help of pronunciation will also be available ahead of time.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
