What is the course about?
This course offers an opportunity to use printmaking and the materials inherent in the autographic process of Mokulito as a means to explore drawing and gesture.
You will also explore a variety of strategies used in the construction of more sustained images.
This is made possible as your image is printed in a small editions and you then have an opportunity to experiment freely to broaden the outcome.
The courses element of research and informal discussion will extend your concepts and inform reflection.
What will we cover?
Mokulito - the matrix, processing and printing your block
Additions – cutting and hand burnishing
Developing images with collage and additions
Expression – gestural marks, non standard tools,
Composition and Form – stencils
Texture – wood grain, frottage, rubbings,
Artists using Mokulito and lithography techniques.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Operate the Rochat and Littlejohn presses in 310 demonstrating an awareness of H&S issues
Name the characteristic qualities of the processes
Begin to recognise how printmaking processes can be used to best suit mark making, scale and subject.
Edit images by developing these using printmaking techniques
Use non-standard tools to explore mark making qualities offered by the process.
Use stencils and layers in print.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Good basic drawing skills are essential to take advantage of this course.
The processes of Mokulito gestural mark making and can produce precision or painterly results.
Some printmaking experience is recommended.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Talks, practical work, demonstrations, individual tutoring, group discussion.
There is no formal work outside the class but preparation tasks such as cutting stencils or researching artists on the internet can be undertaken if wished to maximise how you use the studio time.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring reference and source material for your prints – sketches, photographs, objects and ephemera.
The course fee covers the basic materials such as inks, solvents and proofing papers.
Donations of lint free rags for cleaning and newspapers are always welcome.
A sketchbook and camera (phone camera) are useful to document proof stages/image development and record additional information to use to develop your images.
We have a few laptops for use with USB’s in room 310.
Basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring any extra or special tools you may favour in your art pencil case.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
If you are interested in pursuing printmaking as a way of exploring personal projects then you might choose to enrol on a general printmaking course or perhaps enrol on the Lithography or photolithography courses running in the Autumn term.
If you wish to embed printmaking within a more general practice then Advanced fine art printmaking
(VS905 or VS986 ) may be for you or the CLFA course (VM550 ) or the FAD (VA654) might be a good choice.
Rolina E. Blok is an artist of Dutch/Romanian origin based in London. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a speciality in Contemporary Approaches to Printmaking. Blok’s practice expands into the digital realm as well as printmaking, sculpture, performance art and curating. Blok is part of the Visual Arts team at City Lit and is currently a Screenprint Fellow at the Royal Academy. I think that working with the other tutors we can inspire and help the students advance in their practice and explore the creative potential within combined digital and print media. I am an advocate for experimentation and would like to instigate conversations surrounding the relationship between the physical realm and the digital world.
