What is the course about?

Ideal for the beginner but also useful for the intermediate painter who wishes to revisit fundamental painting skills. During the course we will explore the behaviour of the brush when using acrylic and oil paint. We will also take inspiration from artists who put the brushmark at centre stage in their art work such as Bernard Frize, Peter Doig and Joan Mitchell. You will receive guidance on how to improve your brushwork, aiming for greater fluency to make every brushmark count, and greater variety, to build the vocabulary of your brushmarks.

What will we cover?

- Types of brush
- Impasto and glazing
- Working wet in to wet
- Use of mediums to improve the flow of paint
- Making economical brushmarks
- Increasing your vocabulary of your brushwork
- Traditional and experimental mark making.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Handle paint with greater fluency and economy
- Use mediums to achieve the desired flow of paint.
- Make marks fluently in acrylic and oil paint.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Ideal for the beginner, no previous painting experience is necessary, and the improver.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for
health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring any extra or special materials.
Students who have their own set of brushes are recommended to bring them. Students are also recommended to bring their own photos, drawings or objects to inspire their paintings.
