What is the course about?
If you're new to gold tooling, this structured course will give you the opportunity to develop a practical grounding in the processes and techniques specific to tooling with gold leaf on paper (using BS Glaire), which in turn will open up the creative potential of the medium. If you have experience in gold tooling, this course is a good opportunity to build on and consolidate your knowledge and techniques, to explore in more depth the mediums potential on paper - as opposed to leather. What will we cover?
Build on your existing skills which will vary from person to person. The course will be structured so that you will be able to work on your own ideas with regular individual/group discussions.
You will be shown a range of gold tooled paper bindings and we will discuss how to approach gold tooling a paper covered book. Depending on your ideas and the structure of your book, we will discuss the best ways to put into context the creative visual possibilities of the medium.
Intermediate and advanced: Build on your existing skills which will vary from person to person. Although the course
will be structured, you will be able to work on your own ideas with regular individual discussions. Please note that
this course will not cover lettering.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Progress to a higher level of design and craftsmanship.
- Be confident in the practice of tooling with gold leaf on paper.
- Transform a design into an image tooled with gold leaf on a paper binding.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Foundation skills in gold tooling will be refreshed, making this course suitable for anyone that has done one or more courses on gold tooling on paper. Please note: if you’ve gold tooled before, but not with Tracey, you may be learning a different technique. However, it won’t take you long to learn, as you’ll be building on what you already know.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for
health and safety information, you will also be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use
numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Please look at the rest of the course outline
carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this course.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This is a practical course and will be taught by demonstration, both group and individual and by group discussion. Teaching will be accompanied by hand-outs and a short bibliography on the subject.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
- You will need to bring a paper-covered book with you. It could be a full paper-covered book with or without the use of adhesive.
- Hand finishing tools (only if you have any)
- Gold cushion (only if you have one)
- Gold knife (only if you have one)
- Japanese screw punch (only if you have one)
- Ramer shower sponge, e.g. Boots the Chemist (To be used as a cooling pad) - A saucer (on which to keep your sponge)
- Size 000 sable brush (make sure it's a good quality brush that holds its point)
- A small bulldog clip
- Staedtler eraser
- 2B pencil.
- A book of loose gold leaf, single thickness approximately 23.5 carat
(e.g. Stuart Stevenson, Website: www.stuartstevenson.co.uk)
- 2 soft white woven cotton dish cloths
- Your usual kit of small tools (i.e. pencil, pair of dividers, ruler, scalpel, apron etc.)
- You will also be asked to make a paper-covered sample boards before the class and bring it with you.

Tracey Rowledge studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths’ College, London, and Fine Bookbinding at Guildford College, Surrey. Her practice combines elements of both fine and applied art. She exhibits internationally and her work is held in many private and public collections. Tracey has received various awards, including a Project Grant from Arts Council England in 2019 for ROOM, a collaborative work with David Clarke for Collect Open, London. In 2016-17 Tracey was artist in residence with David Clarke at Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery, UK, which culminated in the exhibition Shelved; this work went on to be re-presented for an exhibition at Gallery S O, London. Tracey also received support from the Crafts Council to go on the 2008 Cape Farewell Expedition to Disko Bay, Greenland. Tracey teaches gold tooling and bookbinding; she is a partner in Benchmark Bindery, established in 2009 with Kathy Abbott, where conservation underpins their bookbinding work. She is also a founding member of Tomorrow’s Past, an international bookbinding collective whose aim is to encourage an alternative and modern conservation response to antiquarian books.
