What is the course about?
Graphic design has become an essential part of fashion industry. From packaging and lookbooks to swing tags and invitations a fashion company relies heavily on creating a brand that will allow it to be recognised and coveted.
On this course you will study how the application of typography, space, image, effect and colour can facilitate effective communication with a given target audience to build brand awareness.
You will apply these concepts to developing your own logo, packaging design and merchandising material using both hand and digital techniques.
Once you have established your brand you will consider how it will be promoted. Traditional methods of promotion such as magazines and advertising are still part of the mix but you will also explore developing techniques to establish an online presence with social media and websites.
You will use Photoshop to edit and enhance photographs and produce a print advert and a one page website for your brand.
This course will be delivered with both hands-on cut and paste techniques and digital skills using the latest software. It will be essential for anyone who is developing a fashion business and will be a great portfolio builder for anyone with an interest in graphic or fashion design.

- Use Photoshop to edit and save images for web and print
- Use Wix to create a promotional page for a fashion business
- Create a piece of print advertising design
- Create packaging, swing tags and other appropriate merchandising material.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for beginners however some digital experience would be beneficial. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught with workshops, short demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials and handouts. All course materials will be available on Google Classroom that you will have access to throughout the duration of your course. You will receive guidence on how to access Googleclassroom before your first session.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All basic materials and equipment will be supplied as part of the course. We recommend you bring any specific imagery that you may wish to use as reference / inspiration with you. Please bring with you a sketchbook of your choice.

Gillian Fielden has been lecturing in Graphic Design and Adobe Design applications at a number of colleges since 2003. In 2018 she completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Visual Communication at UAL LCC and she has Masters Degree from Nottingham Trent University specialising in printed graphics & branding for fashion. Before becoming a lecturer Gillian had extensive commercial experience designing for a variety of fashion and new media companies, producing graphics and merchandising for garments and later moving into web design and production. Currently freelancing on various music design projects and having designed for companies that include, Joe Bloggs, Burton, Littlewoods, BHS, Macmillan Publishers, ITN, IPC and Lycos, she brings a wide range of industry knowledge and experience to her teaching. In 2010 she become involved with the ‘Pop Up Art School’ at ‘Vintage Festival’ running stencil, print and collage workshops at various events around the country.
