What is the course about?

This one day course will look at the purpose of a logo exploring the fundamental properties of a successful logo design. It will cover concepts such as corporate identity with reference to real-life case studies. You will gain an overview of the logo design process in a professional context.

You will be able to explore the various techniques designers use to create identity: idea generating, spacing, colour, shape, and letterform. Learn ways to add impact and personality to your logo designs, addressing key issues such as legibility, simplicity and typography. This one day course will offer a range of challenges allowing you to build a personal style within the constraints of a realistic brief.

What will we cover?

We will look at the context of graphic design and explore what is the purpose of a logo. We will creatively explore options on how a design can be made, playing with initial ideas and hand-drawn scribbles before moving onto further developments of naming and concepts on Adobe systems. How a design may be used impacts upon our production process for it to be effective in its intended end use.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Research and sketch simple logos exploring differences in concept development
- Identify the different components of a corporate identity
- Design a simple logo in Adobe and apply the finished design to letterhead and business cards, to develop a cohesive corporate identity.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No design experience is necessary, being positive and having an open-mind is important to allow yourself to fully succeed in this one day workshop. Step by step guidance will be provided as needed to fulfil the days tasks.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be made up of visual presentations, group discussion, computer demonstrations and practical work. Basic training in Adobe will be included in the course as well as the use of a class Padlet to show and share work developments and end outcomes. Any suggested extension work will be down to individual student preferences to complete as directed by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring along a sketchbook, some black fineliners/markers, some colouring pencils or felt-tips and a memory stick or hard drive to save work onto from the Apple classroom computers.

Andrew has worked with commercial clients including KLM, London Underground, Narvesen, TV2 Norway, BBC, BAA Heathrow, American Express. Having overseen the production of many print and electronic communications, in the commercial arena and within education, including a previous post at Ravensbourne University College for the art and design foundation course. The foundation course has creative idea generating and making at the core of the education process. He is currently developing courses with CityLit for the Advanced Visual Communications area.
