What is the course about?
This is a chance to broaden your skill set and create effective visual solutions when responding to a series of short design briefs. You will work with grids, type and images on structured formats and be encouraged to experiment and take risks to push your designs forward.
What will we cover?
- Importing,creating and transforming image and text
- The relationship between type and image
- Setting up double page layouts
- Working with grids in InDesign.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Import, create and transform image and text
- Demonstrate an awareness of design aesthetics using type and image
- Create multiple double page spreads.
- Use a range of key tools in InDesign.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is ideal for those who are interested in trying out different approaches in generating artwork. You are expected to have basic experience in InDesign and should be able to set up a document and place image and text.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Graphics.
You may be asked to undertake some work between classes to research, prepare or practice work for your projects.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Basic materials will be provided. Please bring any particular imagery or work you wish to focus no as part of this course. We also advise that you bring a sketchbook of your choice and a selection of pens.

Pam Williams is a designer and an educator with a wealth of industry experience. Working with leading architects, including Foster and Partners to create exhibition and signage design. Whilst at The Museum of London she produced graphic illustrations for inhouse Archaeology publications. She is responsible for the visual identity and promotional material for Peckham based Ganapati Restaurant. Pam has been lead as well as contributed to teaching Visual Communications at the University of the Arts on the Foundation course and for Central Saint Martin Summer School Programme. She is a graduate of Central Saint Martins and The Royal College of Art.
