History of oriental carpets

What is the course about?

This Saturday course will focus on the history of carpets’ production in the Islamic world, their trade with Europe and their role as one of the favourite subjects in Renaissance canvases.

What will we cover?

Through the analysis of the most iconic carpets, you will become familiar with threads, materials, patterns and trends as well as patrons and places of manufacture. In the morning we will examine the carpets produced by the most powerful Islamic dynasties and we will have a look at the carpets’ trade from the Islamic world to Europe, mainly Italy. In the afternoon we will complete the course focusing on the history of carpets’ representation on the canvases of famous Renaissance artists.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- recognise the most important historical carpets;
- identify the period and the area of production;
- discuss their patterns;
- establish skills of critical and visual analysis.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge is required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching is intended to be interactive. PowerPoint presentations with a wide range of slides will accompany the prepared talks. Questioning is welcomed throughout. Handouts with a selected bibliography and other helpful information for further self-study will be provided on Google Classroom.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other cost. Please bring writing material and your eagerness to learn a lot about the carpet production in the Islamic World.
