What is the course about?

This is an introductory course covering brief history of massage, benefits, and easy to follow techniques to allow you to practice on yourself, friends and family. Focussing on the extremities (feet, arms, hands), this course will enable you to practice massage without the need to undress. You will learn key massage techniques which you can use to ease muscle tension and aid relaxation.

Contraindications to massage
Practical massage techniques
Massage oils.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Identify 2 commonly used massage oils
- Name some of the contra-indications to massage
- List the benefits of massage
- Demonstrate basic massage techniques
- Perform basic massage of hands, arms and feet on friends and family.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course, no prior experience is required, just willingness to give and receive massage.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This will be an experiential workshop with some theory taught via a presentation, most of the workshop will be hands on and practical. You’ll be in pairs for practical elements of the workshop

There is no additional work outside class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notepad/pen. Two towels. Please wear a top with short sleeves, for easy access to the hands and arms.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can go on to other introductory massage or complementary therapy courses including reflexology, aromatherapy, facial skin care, holistic massage. There are also several accredited courses for those thinking of practising professionally.

Janet Whitehead

Jan has been a practising therapist for over fifteen years, and a tutor for ten years. She practises nutrition, holistic massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, Indian head massage, Thai yoga massage, Japanese facial rejuvenation and pregnancy massage. She currently teaches massage, reflexology, manual lymphatic drainage, facials, stone therapy, nutrition, and anatomy and physiology courses at City Lit and other London colleges. Jan is passionate about health and wellbeing. In her spare time, she enjoys increasing her holistic knowledge, cooking, playing tennis, travelling and theatre.
