Learn the fundamental skills and different approaches to layout skills with this creative and practical workshop. Bring your projects and artwork along as you are guided towards building and developing a professional graphic design portfolio. The course encourages you to take risks, be playful and explore different ways of working, arranging and communicating your ideas and work. You will learn some of the core skills in layout, importing, exporting and printing through Adobe In-Design. Suitable for those with an interest in print based design, graphic design, illustration and those who want support in building an art and design portfolio for industry, application and beyond.
This course is FREE if a) you live in London and your job is at risk of redundancy or b) you are either on Jobseekers' Allowance (JSA) or Employment & Support Allowance(ESA) or c) you receive other state benefits (including Universal Credit) and your monthly take home pay is less than £343. What is the course about?

This is a chance to broaden your skill set and create effective visual solutions when responding to a series of short design briefs. You will work with grids, type and images on structured formats and be encouraged to experiment and take risks to push your designs forward.

What will we cover?

- Importing,creating and transforming image and text
- The relationship between type and image
- Setting up double page layouts
- Working with grids in InDesign.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Import, create and transform image and text
- Demonstrate an awareness of design aesthetics using type and image
- Create multiple double page spreads.
- Use a range of key tools in InDesign.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is ideal for those who are interested in trying out different approaches in generating artwork. You are expected to have basic experience in InDesign and should be able to set up a document and place image and text.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Graphics.
You may be asked to undertake some work between classes to research, prepare or practice work for your projects.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No. The latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.).

Andy McCarten is a graphic design consultant and lecturer with over thirty years of commercial and academic experience in creating and leading national and international design projects for clients in TV, retail, manufacturing, finance and banking, across Europe and beyond. Andrew has worked with commercial clients including KLM, London Underground, Narvesen, TV2 Norway, BBC, BAA Heathrow, American Express. Having overseen the production of many print and electronic communications, in the commercial arena and within education, including a previous post at Ravensbourne University College for the art and design foundation course. The foundation course has creative idea generating and making at the core of the education process. He is currently developing courses with CityLit for the Advanced Visual Communications area.
