What is the course about?

This course will teach you how to use HTML to create and update simple web pages using the free code editor Notepad++. You will learn how web sites are created and maintained and you will learn to control the appearance of a web page using CSS

Participants who will attend the full course will receive a City Lit certificate of attendance electronically for their CV or CPD records. The certificate will show your name, course title and dates of the course you have attended.

You can choose to attend this course either live online or in person.
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

• Introduction to HTML and CSS
• Use HTML tags to structure and format a web page
• Use headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and attributes
• Inserting images into web pages
• Linking pages together
• Link to other web sites
• Checking pages for errors
• Using CSS to style a webpage
• Change colors, fonts, backgrounds and control spacing
• Create a 'mobile first' layout with the div tag
• Planning a small web site
• Introduction to SEO
• How to publish and host a web site.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Create simple web pages incorporating text and images.
• Link pages together to create a web site
• Apply Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to style your web pages.
• Edit and update HTML code
• Validate and check pages for errors
• Optimise a web page for search engines
• Plan and build a simple 'mobile first' web site.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is aimed at beginners to HTML5 & CSS.

You should have knowledge of :
• Basic file management (opening, saving, copying and moving files on a computer)
• Using the World Wide Web (www)
• Using a simple Word Processor or text editor

You should also be able to follow spoken and written instructions and add, subtract, multiply and divide.

You will follow HTML and CSS demonstrations by a tutor, complete practical coding tasks with support and be able to ask questions and receive feedback.

George graduated with a degree in Art,Design and Media and soon after became interested in the burgeoning web design industry. He started learning HTML and associated web design skills and later worked for design agencies and as a freelance designer on a variety of projects ranging from large corporations to small businesses. After dipping his toe into the teaching pool, George found he really enjoyed sharing his skills with others and helping them to achieve their goals and has been teaching for Visual Arts at City Lit since 2012. The thing he enjoys most about teaching at City Lit is the wide range of interesting people he meets at work.
