What is the course about?
The course is about learning the processes and techniques to communicate ideas through image-making. You will be guided through the process of answering to a brief. You will learn ways to research a subject, and how to begin generating and communicating ideas visually. You will be introduced to a variety of traditional and contemporary tools and techniques including collage, cut-outs, drawing, paint, 3D objects and digital, and will be encouraged to evaluate the context in order to select the most appropriate. You will explore the relationship between text and image. You will be introduced to different approaches in visual story-telling. You will start to create a portfolio of work using a range of media and will learn about the priorities of setting up your own illustration practice. What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a beginners course and is aimed at those who are new to the field of illustration. No particular skills are necessary.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
develop some of the work outside the class. Homework will include research, idea and image development. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Graphics & Illustration and Photography.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The course covers basic materials and equipment. It would be useful for you to have the following equipment at the first class, sketchbook of your choice, pens and pencils. Also worthwhile to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.)
You will be introduced to art materials, what you may find useful to have and where you could purchase those.

You can develop your skills further on VK554 Illustration: stage 2, or compliment your illustration skills with a range of courses in illustration, Graphics, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.
