What is the course about?

This is a short fun intensive course understanding the creative potential of Adobe Illustrator for textile repeat pattern design. While developing your digital drawing skills we explore design fundamentals while creating a series of mathematical repeats using your own inspiration or artwork.

What will we cover?

• Develop your knowledge of Adobe Illustrator for textile design
• Understanding different repeat pattern structures
• Contrasting form, line, and colour into complex repeat patterns, using alignment tools, pattern options and pattern tile tool
• Manipulating elements or objects using transformation tools, subtraction tools and colour tools
• Develop your own pattern swatch library to create tiles, use as pattern fills or develop full complex layered repeat.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Develop motifs/artwork into repeat pattern designs
• Make accurate geometric prints
• Learn to create different repeat pattern styles; block, half-drop, all-over seamless and diamond structure
• Create several scales and colourways.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

• This is for anyone who knows the basics of using Adobe Illustrator, but may be new to repeat pattern design for print
• You must be able to navigate around the workspace of the programme, save files and work confidently
• Confident to draw and create a basic motif in Illustrator
You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs, and health and safety information. You will be encouraged to take short written notes for your own use and take part in group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course taught in person through technical demonstrations, Q&A, group discussions, and practical activities.

This course is supported by Google Classroom as an E-learning virtual environment. You will need to login into our Google classroom before our sessions starts where all course materials will be stored. Details on how you can access this will be provided before the course starts.

Student preparation and homework outside class times is strongly encouraged to support progress on this course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Access to basic materials and resources are available as part of the course. You will also need;

• A notepad and pen to take notes during our sessions
• A selection of ideas to work on. These can be your drawings, photographs, paintings, fabric samples, designs and images of colours, textures and patterns that inspire you.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The techniques learnt on this course can be applied to many areas of Art and Design.
