What is the course about?

Improving vocal skills for business and professional people by creating spontaneity and confidence in vocal expression and with attention to articulation and pitch.

What will we cover?

The physicalisation of sound and words.
Clarity of articulation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Use your voice as an expression of yourself.
Demonstrate confidence in your ability to communicate through the voice.
Express the physical power and beauty of language.
Maintain vocal confidence when faced with new and/or challenging situations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All are welcome.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Individual practical work. Work in pairs/small groups/large group. Theoretical input will be minimal and fed into practical sessions. You will need to prepare some exercises between classes.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please read around the subject of voice work before you join the course. Please bring a notebook and pen to the class.

Nikki Kelly

Nikki has taught voice at City Lit since 2011, as well as other London drama schools. Her focus is the rigour and clarity of articulation aligned with proper breath technique and projection. She is best known to millions of viewers for her role as Sylvia in the 1980s show “Hi-de-Hi!” for BBC TV. Nikki trained at Rose Bruford College, and gained early theatre experience in rep companies in the UK and abroad, including “No Sex Please, We’re British” (Sweden), “Confessions of a Window Cleaner” in (Zimbabwe) and “Who Goes Bare” (South Africa). She toured with John Inman in “Bedside Manners,” to rave reviews. Other theatre credits include “Medea,” “Bleak House,” “Murder By Sex,” “Not Now Darling,” “Mixed Doubles,” and “Strip Poker.” On TV, Nikki has appeared in “The Sweeney,” “Life begins at Forty,” and “The Lenny Henry Show,” amongst others. At Christmas, Nikki can be found playing the Wicked Queen in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”or the Wicked Witch in “The Wizard of Oz.” Her distinctive voice has enabled her to work extensively in the voice-over field. Nikki comes from a large theatre family that included her great uncle, Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson, a founder of RADA.
