What is the course about?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has spent 25 years at the top of British pop, with five Top 10 albums and eight Top 10 singles, including Murder on the Dancefloor, Take Me Home, Get Over You and Heartbreak (Make Me a Dancer). The 2001 hit Murder on the Dancefloor enjoyed a major resurgence after featuring in the final scene of Emerald Fennell's film Saltburn.

Her new album Perimenopop, a celebratory soundtrack for mid-life happiness, entered the UK Albums Chart at No.5, her first Top 5 record in over a decade and sixth Top 10 album overall.

Sophie's use of music and the arts to form connections, support mental health and wellbeing, and create community reflects the values of City Lit and our belief in the power of the creative arts. In recognition of this, City Lit will award her a Fellowship, presented by former Good Housekeeping Editor Lindsay Nicholson.

What will we cover?

  • Sophie's 25-year career and biggest hits, from Murder on the Dancefloor to her new album Perimenopop
  • The resurgence of Murder on the Dancefloor following its appearance in Saltburn
  • Her transition into podcasting during Covid, and how that shaped a new chapter of her career
  • Other mental health ventures and how she's used music and the arts to build connection and community
  • The presentation of Sophie's City Lit Fellowship Award, presented by Lindsay Nicholson
