What is the course about?

This first level course will enable you to develop an appreciation of the subject. We will focus on contemporary design. You will see examples of designs from practitioners with an international reputation that will inform and inspire project work. Creative disciplines are grounded in technical ability and here you will be encouraged to develop elementary skills in 3D visualization. These skills will equip you to produce a design for an interior: giving you the confidence to progress and reshape your own home.

One of the sessions is taught off site in the form of a Study Visit. The venue / location is wheelchair accessible and the acoustics are good.

What will we cover?

- 2D drawing and elementary model making
- Appreciation of the subject with reference to space planning, colour, lighting, ergonomics and composition
- Analyse user requirements
- Nature of the design process/ design concept
- Ways of presenting design ideas: verbally and graphically.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate 2D drawing in the form of a plan and elevation at a scale of 1:50
- Produce a design for a single space
- Demonstrate how user requirements influence design

- Produce graphical material that describes an Interior.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Keith C Clarke

Keith Clarke started his career as a Chartered Architect Interior Designer by working on multi-million pound projects for an internationally acclaimed Cambridge practice. He was later commissioned by a series of private clients to design buildings and interiors; one project was used to produce a DVD and Design Guide. Colleges and Universities in the UK and Europe have used this as teaching material. During this period he completed the refurbishment of six Victorian properties with sole responsibility for design and project management. Recently he published a Book, 'Mahler's Heavenly Retreats' and produced another three films that have been presented to The Gustav Mahler Society (Uk), Gresham College, Surrey University and The BBC PROMS and led to lectures and Short Courses on how people are inspired by their environment. Keith has extensive teaching experience at Beginners, Undergraduate, Post-Graduate and Masters level. He was an External Examiner at a Paris School of Interior Design and Architecture and has directed International Study Visits. He loves working with students; encouraging them to develop their skills and creativity.
