What is the course about?

Worried by the thought of the interview process? This 1-day workshop, specially designed for people who stammer, will help you to prepare for an interview, project yourself positively and deal with your stammer more effectively. There will be a focus on interview practise with opportunities to receive supportive and constructive feedback.

What will we cover?

Identifying your strengths and areas for development during interviews
Non-verbal communication
Building confidence
Managing your stammer more effectively during interviews
Practice, practice, practice.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Identify your strengths during interviews and find ways to work on areas you want to develop
List key aspects of non-verbal communication and have practised them in role-play situations
Practise asking and answering questions in a role-play interview situation
Practise ways to manage your stammering during a role-play interview situation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for people who stammer. No previous knowledge is necessary although it would be helpful for you to
have had some previous speech therapy.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A variety of teaching methods will be used including: discussion, working in pairs/small groups, self exploration,
demonstration, feedback and practical exercises/role play. Handouts will be provided.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can do a Stage 1 evening course or one of our intensive courses if you have not attended one previously.
Alternatively you can do any of our progression courses including topic-based workshops, such as Public Speaking or Debating Skills for People who Stammer.

Cathinka Guldberg

Cathinka has worked as a Speech and Language Therapist for over 30 years, both in the NHS and independent practice as well as in adult education. She has spent the recent years of her career specialising exclusively in working with adults who stammer, both in groups and one-to-one. She also has a degree in Psychology and has attended training in a number of therapeutic approaches, such a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness and Counselling, and integrates these skills into her work with adults who stammer. Cathinka has extensive experience of giving presentations and providing training to large and small audiences and has developed a special interest in the skill of public speaking. She runs regular public speaking courses at City Lit for people who stammer and has recently contributed to a professional text for speech and language therapists on the topic of public speaking for people who stammer.
