What is the course about?
This course introduces you to a variety of ways of approaching drawing and painting. You will learn the basic skills needed to draw and paint from observation and the imagination, and will develop confidence in using a range of drawing materials and acrylic paint.
What will we cover?
Through a series of practical guided exercises, you will be introduced to ways of seeing shape, light and shade, and proportional relationships and learn ways of drawing with line, tone and a range of mark-making to begin to render light, shape and volume in your drawings. In painting, you will learn how to organise a palette, mix colours and use a range of painting techniques. You will work with a range of drawing materials including pencil and charcoal and in painting, acrylic paint.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Draw and paint with more confidence from observation and the imagination
- Employ a variety of ways of using line and tone to express light, shape and volume in drawing
- Use basic colour theory and and practical methods for mixing colours from observation
- Use a range of painting techniques such as 'impasto', 'scumble' and 'glaze'
- Create a painting from its initial drawing stages, to completion.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a course for beginners. No experience is necessary.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Practical work, tutor demonstrations, presentations, 1:1 guidance and discussion.

Mario Lautier Vella is a cross-disciplinary, award-winning artist who began his art career at City Lit. After completing a number of short courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles, Mario went on to do the two-year City Lit Fine Art course before going back to university to gain his Masters degree. Mario regularly exhibits in the UK and abroad and his work can be found in private collections around the world. Mario has enjoyed teaching at City Lit since 2011.
