What is the course about?

This course introduces ways of looking at the structure of the human figure from direct observation of the unclothed model. You will learn about proportion, scale and methods of measurement in figure drawing. We will also look at how to develop a sensitive and sympathetic use of line and tone in relation to describing the human form and to build confidence in handling paint in relation to life painting. The course aims to help you gain skills of critical appraisal, become familiar with the approach of selected artists, and explore a creative response to the figure, as well as imaginative use of technique.

What will we cover?

We will explore all of the above through a series of guided drawing exercises. The course will encourage an inventive
as well analytical approach to life drawing. Life painting will cover: modelling of form; dealing with
proportion and scale; issues of the figure in space - perspective and foreshortening; weight in relation to posture; and
emotional mood.
You will experience working from both short and long poses.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate an ability to register the structure of the figure quickly and effectively
- Demonstrate an ability to create drawings using both expressive and analytical approaches
- Draw the figure with a sensitive use of line and tone
- represent the figure effectively in painterly terms
- have an expanded sense of paint handling and technique

- Look at, and take inspiration from, the work and practice of a variety of artist.
