What is the course about?
The course offers an introduction to Medieval Latin and its main linguistic features through the reading and translation of selected texts. Knowledge of classical Latin grammar is required.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We will translate passages taken from Medieval Latin works from the 6th to the 12th century. Please contact the tutor through the Classics department 10-7 days before the start of the course in order to obtain the material necessary for the first class. Copies will also be made available in class on the day of the first lesson.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- translate short passages written in Medieval Latin;
- identify the main characteristics of Medieval Latin.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for students who have completed Section 5 of the Reading Latin Grammar (CUP), or studied Latin up to GCSE (or equivalent) at school.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Whole class work. Reading and translating passages taken from Medieval Latin works, tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. Students are asked to prepare the translation of selected passages before each class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No. The material will be provided by the tutor.
