What is the course about?

This course provides an introduction to one of the most popular and widely-used combinations of technologies used to produce dynamic web pages and is intended for anyone who has a basic knowledge of web page design or HTML who wants to learn how to write dynamic webpages
You will learn how to start using PHP and MYSQL to produce webpages that can respond to user input and display information sources from outside the website.

What will we cover?

• What is PHP?
• Adding PHP code to a webpage
• Using webpages with PHP
• Creating web forms
• Processing web forms with PHP
• Making decisions with control statements
• An introduction to databases using MySQL
• Creating databases and table
• Adding/editing/viewing and deleting data from a database
• Using PHP to collect data via forms
• Using PHP to produce webpages displaying data from a database.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Learn the reasons for using PHP and MySQL in web design
- Be able to add PHP code to web pages
- Learn how to design and use databases
- Create web forms
- Process web forms with PHP.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior knowledge of these technologies is required but students should have some knowledge of creating simple webpages using HTML and good general computing skills. You should be able to follow spoken instructions, read written instructions and information, and discuss work with your tutor in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be some theoretical underpinning to the course, but it is nearly all practical, through Teacher demonstration and practical programming and problem solving activities. There is no official work set outside the class but it is a good idea to practise the skills you have learnt to reinforce classroom learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Computers are provided for each student with all the necessary software installed. All the software used on the course is free to download and use and your tutor will recommend where to find this software for home use. Unfortunately due to the range of hardware and software used by students at home, the College is unable to provide advice on installation issues.

If you wish to copy the programs you produce on the course please bring a USB key or have access to a cloud service such as Google Drive or Dropbox. A pen and notepad for note taking is also advised.

Julian Holden

Julian worked as a technical manager for two large organisations before taking a career break to study for an MA and to qualify as a teacher. He now divides his business hours between working as a freelance marketing consultant and business coach for small to medium-sized businesses, and teaching for City Lit, two other colleges, and for a number of charities that help people gain the skills to start their own business. His key interests include web design and marketing, content strategy, search engine marketing and the use of social media. He is a huge fan of WordPress and also teaches a range of IT courses in Java, Python, PHP and App development.
