What is the course about?

This workshop will introduce you to the psychodynamic approach to counselling and psychotherapy, exploring how therapists use the approach in their work.

What will we cover?

- The historical background to current psychodynamic practice
- Key psychodynamic concepts and techniques; the use of transference and counter transference; the unconscious and interpretation
- A comparison with psychoanalysis and humanistic approaches
- Case studies.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Describe key elements of the psychodynamic approach
- Recognise some differences between this approach and others
- Outline the application of this approach to certain situations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Introductory level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor input and discussion; experiential work in pairs and small groups; using your own histories and case studies and role play exercises.
