What is the course about?

Learn about the world of picture books. An opportunity to explore your ideas and characters as you work towards creating your own picture book dummy. Over the course you will be encouraged to examine the relationship between illustration and text, as well as being offered the opportunity to explore your own personal visual language. Discussions will consider the perspective of current publishing demands, target age ranges and global markets.

- Discover useful publishing terminology
- Learn how to layout a picture book dummy
- Examine target age ranges, gender and culture specificity.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Recognise the important relationship between illustration and text
- Be aware of the parameters and scope of the picture book
- Understand how to layout a picture book dummy
- Recognise the difference between a rough and a finished spread.
- Be aware of the varying demands of publishers in relation to age range, gender and markets.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for all levels, though some experience of illustration would be an advantage.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will combine demonstration, group discussion and critique, and individual tuition. You will be encouraged to contribute ideas and present your work. Homework will include research and image development.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course fee covers basic materials and equipment. It would be very useful for you to bring a sketchbook of your choice and any visuals you want to work with as part of the course.
