What is youth work? More and more young people are in need of youth facilities than ever. There are so many roles and organisations you could be part of to help young people's lives. Find out more about what working in youth work looks like and what skills are required in this field. This course will prepare you to go on to our level 2 certificate in youth work and is a requirement if you have not studied for a long time. What is the course about?
This class offers an introduction to youth work. According to the National Youth Agency, 'Youth work is a distinct educational process adapted across a variety of settings to support a young person’s personal, social and educational development' The principles of youth work are supported by reflective practice and peer education, establishing and maintaining relationships with young people and community groups. The 3 most common routes into Youth Work are: Apprenticeship, Youth Support Worker and Professional Youth Work. This course will offer you an introduction to the subject to help you find out if it is right for you.
You will find out about the different provisions and services available to young people and the skills and qualities required in a youth worker.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.

You will learn about some basic theories of youth work.
You will learn about some examples of youth provision and projects for young people and the positive impact it can have.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a non-accredited introductory course, we recommend this course if you want to apply for the level 2 youth work certificate.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught in a variety of ways to suit different learning styles. There will be group discussion, presentations, role play and practical work. You may also have visitors or watch videos.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No, but you may wish to bring a note pad and pen.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
When you have finished you could apply for one of our level 1 or level 2 courses.
