What is the course about?

The course aims to help students continue to acquire a foundation understanding of the Irish language, and to begin communicating in practical situations with an insight into the Irish culture.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

The course will give students the opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills. It will cover Irish elementary grammar, spelling system, vocabulary and socio-cultural elements of the language. Topics include: discussing hobbies and free time, ordering food and drinks, past tense of verbs.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Discuss hobbies and free time

- Order food and drinks

- Use verbs in the past tense.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for those who have completed Irish Gaelic beginners module 1, or who have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:
active students' interaction
emphasis on speaking and listening skills
pair and group work
role plays
use of realia, pictures and anthentic material
use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Please note that students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do homework as and when required.

Niall O'Siadhail

Niall is a language teacher and activist from County Tyrone. He first studied Irish at secondary school, and went on to study Modern Irish, Old Irish and Irish Folklore at University College Dublin. Since moving to London in 2008 he has worked as an English and Irish teacher, teaching adults from around the world. The cultural context of the Irish language is always a key element in his classes. Niall is also a founder member and current Chair and Education Officer of Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain, the local branch of an organisation which has been at the heart of the Gaelic Revival and Irish cultural movements in general since 1893. With CnaG LDN he is involved in various projects which aim to help the Irish language community in London grow, including the Saturday school for children and parents, the Gaelic Voices Choir and regular meet-ups for all who wish to learn, practise or socialise with Irish.
