This course is for intermediate and lower intermediate learners of Italian (approximately Italian 2 Upper and Italian 3 lower) who would like to improve their reading skills and learn new grammar and vocabulary through reading and discussing works of Italian fiction and/or non-fiction. The texts chosen may be in the form of easy readers to facilitate understanding. The chosen texts will be written in Italian, and discussions will be in Italian, though some English may be permitted, so learners will be able to stretch themselves and feel more confident about expressing their opinion and asking questions in class.

What is the course about?

This course is for intermediate learners of Italian who wish to improve their grammar and vocabulary by reading shorter, simpler texts (e.g. short novels/short stories/easy readers), chosen by the tutor and/or suggested by the students. In addition to the language studied, learners will discuss themes and characterisation in the chosen works of fiction, while in the case of non-fiction texts we will discuss the issues raised.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?

The primary focus of the lessons will be discussing the texts read, but we will also use the texts as learning opportunities, looking at the grammar and vocabulary used.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- expand your knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures
- give your opinion about a story and its characters
- give your opinion about topics from the book
- become familiar with a work of Italian literature.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

To join this course, you should have studied Italian for two to three years. If you are currently studying at City Lit, you should be taking either Italian 2 Upper or Italian 3 Lower. You may be able to join and enjoy this course even if your Italian level is slightly lower – please email us if you are unsure of whether you have the minimum necessary level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course will take place onlinle, via Zoom, and will involve:

- active students’ interaction
- student discussions
- pair and group work

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Silvana Vistola

Silvana is a friendly, fun, patient teacher who loves teaching adults. But she is also a qualified teacher who holds a QTS certificate and has worked, as a lecturer in Italian, for two major Sixth Form Colleges in London. She is familiar with classroom management, dealing with mixed ability groups, updated teaching materials, setting targets and achieving goals. Silvana has experience in teaching adults at different language levels, from beginners' Italian to advanced level courses, including business and literature. She has a passion for languages, creative writing, and literature, has worked as a translator and has an MA in media studies. Therefore, digital tools (such as: videos, online newspapers, social media) are an integral part of her teaching. “I use new technologies and online resources, because I believe they make the lesson more dynamic and fun. But my main concern is to create a friendly and relaxed environment in which students can learn, have fun, and make friends. I believe that a cooperative class environment can make learning more enjoyable and more effective.”
