Become a qualified Sports and Remedial massage therapist with our one year course in Sports Massage (Level 3, 4, 5). This course is designed for those with no prior massage qualification. We are delighted to offer, as a free add on, the ITEC Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention (COVID-19) for Complementary Therapies and Sports Massage and the VTCT Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work. This course provides you with all the qualifications and training required to work as a Professional Sports Massage Therpaist. This course runs on a Friday daytime only.

The course fee is £1417, plus an upfront fee of £1032 payable at the time of your enrolment.

What is the course about?

This is a comprehensive course that will provide you with 3 industry required qualifications.
1. ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage
2. ITEC Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention (COVID-19) for Complementary Therapies and Sports Massage
3. ITEC Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage
4. ITEC Level 5 Certificate in Sports Massage
5. VTCT Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work

This course will enable you to practice and gain the highest level of training in the UK, recognised by leading professional associations (Sports Massage Association, Sports Therapy Association) and to give you the confidence to work with a variety of professionals and injuries.

This year long course will guide you through the suite of ITEC Sports massage qualifications starting with the foundation of the level 3 diploma which is built upon with the level 4 and 5 certificates.

Designed for those with no prior massage qualification

It is an intensive course and you will be guided and supported by your tutor throughout the course. Sessions are interactive and fun, making learning enjoyable.

Please note that your exam dates are set by ITEC, and cannot be changed.

The ITEC COVID-19 Infection Prevention course is a compulsory unit and must be completed in order to gain your massage qualification. This will be taught online. No additional fees apply.

As First Aid is a professional requirement, we have incorporated the Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work qualification into the course programme. This will be completed after your Massage training and exams have taken place. No additional fees apply.

Due to COVID 19, if the Government amends lockdown guidelines, some of the theoretical modules may be taught online. The Practical elements will be taught in class. The college will provide all necessary PPE required.

What will we cover?

Each course level will give you a deeper understanding:

Level 3 will cover essential anatomy and physiology, principles of exercise, legislation and professional practice, introduction to soft tissue dysfunction and classical sports massage techniques.

Level 4 builds upon the subjects covered in the level 3, however expands upon anatomy, soft tissue injuries and management and performing a consultation which will include appropriate orthopaedic (“special”) test. You will also learn advanced massage techniques such as soft tissue release, neuromuscular techniques and introduction to muscle energy techniques.

Level 5 culminates the course with expanding your knowledge about the nervous system, injuries, how to perform complex clinical testing and to explore literature to reinforce your treatment approach. You will learn further advanced massage techniques such as positional release techniques, consolidate muscle energy techniques and much more. The ultimate aim of this level is to prepare you to work autonomously in the sports and remedial massage sector. Upon completion you will have attained the highest level recognised sports massage qualification in the UK.

Confidently identify bony landmarks within the body.
Understand the influence and effect of client information and how this impacts upon treatment.
Describe common soft tissue pathologies/injuries.
Carry out detailed case history taking with relevant orthopaedic testing.
Explore evidence based practice in the context of sports/soft tissue massage.
Perform advanced massage techniques to manage your client’s complaint.
Discuss the impact of cryo and thermotherapy within a therapeutic encounter.

Level 5
Understand neurological presentations (including dermatomes, myotomes and testing).
Describe and confidently discuss a selection of neurological injuries.
Understand sports specific posture and gait and to analyse findings.
Confidently explore evidence based practice and reflect upon literature.
Understand and to perform complex case history and assessment taking.
Confidently apply specialised soft tissue techniques.
Consolidate your learning and autonomous practitionership.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You do not require a prior massage qualification to enrol on this course.

This is a Level 3 course. There are no prerequisites required, however, due to the intensity of the course we recommend that you attend one, or both, of the following courses prior to enrolling on this course:
'Massage: Access to level 3' or 'Massage: an introduction' - a six week, or shorter introduction to massage basics
'Anatomy and Physiology; access to level 3' - a six week introduction to the body systems.

You will also need to have sufficient literacy, numeracy and ICT skills to complete assignments to the required standard. There is an expectation that you have at least GCSE/Level 2 English, or working towards. As you progress through the course you will be required to complete assignments which will require personal research. You will be expected to engage with the online resources throughout this course on Google Classroom. Please ensure you have access to a computer and familiar with accessing Google.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course will use a variety of teaching methods to ensure your learning is interactive and effective. One method used is ‘flipped learning’, you will access the online content in preparation for each session. This approach will enable a deeper level of learning to take place in the classroom though a variety of activities including games, quizzes, small group activities and projects.
Along with in class materials, you will also keep a personal learning plan which will show your journey through your training.

A minimum of ten hours of home study per week is essential to successfully complete this course.

You will also need access to a massage couch, find clients to undertake case studies outside of the classroom time, and have access to a computer and the internet to research and write up your course projects.

You will sit an end of course theory and practical exams which is set by ITEC, you will also build your portfolio of evidence through completing set assignments, case studies and in class tests.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to purchase the following items to bring to class -

Practical sessions:
• Massage oil (sweet almond or grapeseed)

Theory sessions:

• Folders for handouts
• Pen and paper

You will also need access to a massage couch to undertake treatments outside of the classroom time.

The college will provide towels for practice and exams. You will need your own towels for performing treatments on clients outside of City Lit.

The college will also provide each student with one (non-gender specific) scrub uniform.

Trevor England

Trevor is a registered and practising Osteopath, Complementary Therapist and Pilates instructor who has been working within the sector since 2004. He has a practice in Central London which enables him to share clinical experiences with his students. Trevor has had the opportunity to promote complementary medicine through interviews on BBC London and numerous magazine reviews. He has also written articles for industry and professional body magazines and presented at the CAM expo, London. Trevor began teaching Sports and Remedial Massage in 2007 and has since taught a variety of subjects for complementary therapy and fitness sectors throughout the UK. He is a fully qualified tutor, assessor and mentor/coach. Outside of complementary medicine, Trevor also works in teacher education at City Lit. Trevor began his Pilates journey from an early age as a part of dance training. He completed his Pilates qualification with STOTT PILATES and since qualifying, has taught at several Pilates studios and gyms. He enjoys delivering clinical Pilates which is ideal for the treatment of musculoskeletal problems. Website:
