Improve your level of upper intermediate Japanese. You will be able to understand, speak and listen to more complex expressions in Japanese in various everyday situations.
Suitable if you have studied Japanese for about 6 years or equivalent. Consolidate your knowledge and understanding of the structures of the Japanese language and work on more
complex grammatical structures and functions. Suitable if you have studied Japanese for about 5 years or have an equivalent level.

What is the course about?

On this course, you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of sentence structures and grammatical functions to understand more advanced and complex expressions. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to improve your speaking and listening skills as well as consolidate your reading and writing skills.

We will cover a wide range of everyday situations, including cultural information about Japan and focus on improving your conversational Japanese.
This course is suitable for the learners who have studied for about 6 years or have completed Japanese 4 upper module 1 and 2 or equivalent.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?

Based on lessons 3 and 4 Japanese for Busy People Volume 3.
Describing changes, trends and common sights, the effects of an action, your efforts and purposes and nominalizing sentences.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Describe changes using "yoninaru" in variouse situations.
- Describe negative changes using "nakunaru"
- Describe your effort using "yonisuru","yoni shiteiru"
- asking someone’s effort using “yonishitekudasai”
- Express purposes "- yoni -"
- Describe continuous changes using "~teiku"
- Talk about changes in your life
- Talk about trends and common sights
- Talking about past experiences using "koto –ta koto ga arimasu" (review)
- Talking about ability or things possible using "koto –koto ga dekimasu"
- Talk about your hobby
- Nominalaize sentences using "no” (review)
- Nominalaize sentences using "koto" with verbs, adjectives and noun
- Understand the various compound words using kanji
- Use polite and casual speech (review).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Ideally you have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Exam N5, or you should have completed Japanese for Busy People Volume 1 and 2, as well as Japanese for Busy People Volume 3 unit 1 (lesson 1-3).

Students should be able to read and write Hiragana and Katakana as well as have some knowledge of Kanji (JLPT N4 level or above).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays, games and discussions of topics. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual materials.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Kiyomi Unten

Kiyomi started teaching Japanese in 2002. Since then, she has taught Japanese in the adult education sector at the various institutions and universities. She joined City Lit in 2013 and she has been teaching at all levels, from Beginners to Advanced classes. She is also working as a writer for a Japanese free paper where she writes about cultural information for Japanese people. She enjoys working both as a language teacher and a writer, as she likes to deepen her understanding of Japanese in its basic form, as well as developing her use of the language creatively.
