What is the course about?
Learn to play and improvise over jazz standards in swing and Latin syles. Develop the strategies and skills covered in jazz piano 1, and expand your repertoire of tunes.
What will we cover?
- Essential playing material that is 12-24 bars in length
- the minor key II V I cadence
- Modal tunes and modal playing
- Approaches to improvising
- How to practise; what to practise
- keeping time well.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Play regular standard tunes in major/relative minor keys
- Solo over this type of standard
- Build intros, create basslines
- Comp (accompany) effectively
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of how to play in swing and latin time.
- play with other people.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have completed Jazz piano1, or have otherwise learned to use "shell" voicings for II V I cadences in all major keys.You need experience of listening to jazz piano and the ability to understand and interpret diatonic chord changes in standard lead sheets. You need to be confident in your use of the modes of the major scale.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through tutorial input with appropriate individual help / advice and practising to rhythm section backing tracks. Mostly you will play as a group in class at digital pianos.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring manuscript paper and a pencil and a device to record class if you wish. Learning resources are also available in the google classroom.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can progress to Jazz piano 3 or Latin piano when next scheduled.
Early signs of musical activity indicated David’s future path, and after taking grades on both piano and viola, he obtained a first-class honours degree in music at Leeds University, studying both instruments. He subsequently completed a postgraduate jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying piano with Simon Purcell, where he obtained an LGSM. He obtained an MMus in composition with Merit at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, with support from the Trinity College London scholarship, studying with Deirdre Gribbin, Gwyn Pritchard and Paul Newland. David is passionate about teaching, and teaches adult piano students at City Lit, as well as piano to individuals in his private practice and to young learners for Richmond Music Trust. He also performs from time to time as a jazz and classical pianist and undertakes practical music examining work for ABRSM jazz and classical syllabuses both in the UK and abroad. David also enjoys playing chamber music on viola.
