What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to introduce students to basic oral communication skills in Korean; to give them the opportunity to practise and improve these skills in a variety of day to day situations; to promote interest in and awareness of the language and its culture today.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Topics covered will include: personal information, numbers, food, holiday plans, the weather, health.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

to greet people and introduce oneself and others

- to give and ask for personal information

- learn the Korean alphabet

- to say numbers and prices

- to order food

- talk about holiday plans

- give and ask directions

- talk about the weather

- describe health issues

-read simple recipes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for complete beginners.
This course moves at a particularly fast pace, fitting two terms of work into 13 weeks. You will have to do some preparation before each lesson as well as consolidation through homework.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The tutor will advise you about a coursebook in the first lesson.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Korean beginners module 3 in September. Please enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Heeyun Choi

Heeyun has been a Korean teacher for 12 years. She was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She majored in Korean Language and Literature for her BA in Seoul and completed her Korean teaching education training in 2009. She went on to teach at universities in China and Thailand after she obtained her Korean teaching certificate. Heeyun came to the UK in 2015 and studied at SOAS, University of London. She enjoys teaching Korean and has a lot of experience teaching groups and individuals from diverse backgrounds, age groups and ability levels. She also loves language learning herself and understands the difficulties students can face and how she can help students overcome them. She looks forward to meeting you and very much hopes you enjoy learning Korean at Citylit!
