This course is for people who have completed the first module of the Korean beginners class or have studied Korean for at least 30 hours. You will acquire basic knowledge of the Korean language and culture through mostly speaking and listening.
What will we cover?
Topics: Talking about the past, school days, honorific speech and expressing politeness. Grammar: past tense, how to make negative sentences, how to express 'also/ too', locations, verb + in order to go/come, verb + do/do not in formal speech, verb + want/would like/hope.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Express past actions e.g what you did at a party. - Talk about a past issue while you are on the telephone with someone. - Talk about why you couldn't make an appointment. - Describe where specific places/objects were. - Describe where your school and your classroom and what you did at your school. - Use honorific speech in conversations, talking about the past, giving directions, expressing wishes.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for those who have completed beginners modules 1 and 2 or have about 30hrs of learning Korean.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The lessons are based on the communicative approach. The emphasis is put on speaking and listening. There will be pair and group work as well as role-plays. Audio-visual techniques will be included whenever appropriate. Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework.

Jiyeon Kim is a certified Korean teacher, born and raised in South Korea, where she studied Political Science at university. Her teaching career began with yoga, but after moving to London in 2020, she transitioned to teaching Korean, discovering a deep passion for sharing the language and culture. This led her to pursue a degree in Teaching Korean to Foreigners, making her a certified instructor. Jiyeon believes that learning a language is deeply connected to understanding its culture. In her classes, she blends Korean grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation with cultural insights, creating a fun and immersive experience. With extensive experience, she has had the privilege of working with over 300 students from diverse backgrounds and different ages. Currently, she teaches at City Lit, where she finds meeting and teaching students incredibly rewarding. In addition to her teaching, Jiyeon runs social media channels that make learning Korean accessible and engaging. Passionate about helping her students succeed, she is dedicated to guiding them toward achieving their Korean language goals with confidence and success.
