What is the course about?
The course is designed to introduce you to the Latin language or remind you what you have learned before, revising and building on your basic knowledge. The textbook will be confirmed shortly.
What will we cover?
In this first module, you will be introduced to the conjugation of verbs in the present indicative and the declension of nouns and adjectives.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read and write simple Latin sentences
- demonstrate basic knowledge of verb forms (conjugations)
- demonstrate basic knowledge of Latin nouns and adjectives
- have some insights into the derivation of English words
- demonstrate some knowledge on the world of ancient Rome.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a course for complete beginners although those who have some previous knowledge of Latin may wish to join for revision purposes. As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
If you have never studied grammar before, you may benefit from attending one of the short courses titled “Grammar for ancient languages: an introduction”.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly, check the resources uploaded on Google Classroom and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 1-2 hours per week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring writing material. The textbook will be confirmed shortly but we recommend you purchase the book after the first session of the course, after you’ve had confirmation that the class is suitable for you.
