What is the course about?
This course is designed for students who have studied Year 2 Latin and wish to improve their knowledge of Latin
grammar and their ability to read and write Latin, as well as exploring Roman culture and history. We will use
Reading Latin, by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (2 volumes: second edition 2016), starting at Section 4A.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We will read adapted selections form Cicero’s In Verrem.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- demonstrate. an understanding of Cicero’s arguments against Verres and of some of the features of rhetorical Latin.
- understand the formation and uses of the imperfect tense
- understand indirect statements in Latin
- have a deeper understanding of the uses of the ablative case
- read Latin prose with greater confidence and fluency.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is designed for students who have completed Latin 2 module 3 at City Lit or have been learning Latin for around two years. As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 1-2 hours per week.

Judith has been teaching Classics (and other subjects) to both adults and children for over 10 years, and before that worked as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language, as a journalist, and in charities. She has taught at the Open University, Royal Holloway, and Birkbeck and is currently Head of Classics at a school in North London, and finds the similarities and difference sbetween adult and school education both challenging and fascinating. Having returned to formal education as a mature student herself, to pursue postgraduate work in Greek cultural and intellectual history, she has a strong commitment to continuing education. She has degrees from Oxford University and Royal Holloway, University of London and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Judith's love of ancient language, literature, philosophy, and archaeology arises from an overridng interest in ideas, and in the ways that we can learn about how people have thought in different times and places.
