What is the course about?

The course is designed to consolidate and deepen your knowledge of Latin grammar, preparing you to read and discuss unadapted texts.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will use 'Latin to GCSE' by Henry Cullen and John Taylor, supplemented by the companion volume 'Latin Stories'and other material supplied by the tutor. . The exact starting point will be confirmed on the first session of the course.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate a solid knowledge of complex grammar
- read and translate intermediate Latin texts with fluency and confidence
- appreciate the themes, language and style of selected Latin poetry and prose.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for those who have studied Latin for approximately 4 years or have an equivalent knowledge (i.e. A Level or the first year of a university course). As this course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammatical exercises with a high level of student participation (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 1-2 hours per week.

Textbook: “Latin to GCSE” by Henry Cullen and John Taylor, Bloomsbury 2016, Volumes I (ISBN 978-1780934402)
and Volume II (ISBN 978-1780934419).
Other texts will be supplied or confirmed by the tutor during the course.
