What is the course about?

You will be reading and translating original Latin texts to study their linguistic, stylistic, and cultural features; you will also be studying their distinct genres and the historical background which produced them. .

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

You will continue reading the Cena Trimalchonis from The Satyricon of Petronius. Secondary readings will be provided by the tutor. .

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read and translate with confidence and enjoyment
- display an understanding of the position of The Satyricon within the context of Roman society and literary culture
- demonstrate an appreciation of the style of Petronius .

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you are an advanced student and have studied Latin at the City Lit for about four years or have an equivalent knowledge of Latin. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to see if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class. .

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Students will be assigned a passage of the text to prepare for each class, during which there will be discussions on the language, style, themes, and historical background of the text. Homework: about two to three hours per week. .

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The recommended text is: Petronius Cena Trimalchionis, Latin Text with Facing Vocabulary and Commentary, free from here: https://geoffreysteadman.files.wordpress.com/2018/06/petronius-1june18w.pdf.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Another Latin 5 class.

Sean Gabb

Sean has been teaching Greek and Latin for a very long time, and he loves what he does. While not doing that, he's made the time to write around forty books. These include twelve historical novels, by "Richard Blake," and published by Hodder & Stoughton. They also include editions of Book VI of "The Aeneid," the "Historia Langobardorum" of Paul the Deacon, and various parts of St Jerome's Latin version of The New Testament. One of his science fiction novels was nominated for the 2015 Prometheus Award.
