What is the course about?

This is a course about improving your knowledge and appreciation of Latin authors in the original language. It is about deepening your understanding and enlarging your enjoyment of Latin study. It is especially suitable if you are progressing from adapted to unadapted Latin texts. It also aims to improve your writing of Latin.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will translate, examine and discuss Book I of Livy in the Geoffrey Steadman edition, available on-line and via Amazon, and complete exercises from Writing Latin (by Ashdowne and Morwood).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read and translate with confidence and enjoyment
- demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the author's vocabulary & style
- appreciate some of the themes, language and style of the Satires
- demonstrate improved knowledge of Latin grammar
- have improved your writing of Latin.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Latin for about 6 years or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on the learning. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course combines whole-class discussion work with pair and group work. There will be instruction on Latin grammar, grammatical exercises, and translation – combined with pronunciation work, and listening to and reading the texts aloud. You will be expected to do two to three hours’ homework per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please join the course equipped with a copy of:
Geoffrey Steadman’s edition of Livy Book I, available free on-line or via Amazon; and Writing Latin, edited by R. Ashdowne and J. Morwood (Bloomsbury Press 2012) ISBN: 9781853997013.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

These include twelve historical novels, by "Richard Blake," and published by Hodder & Stoughton. They also include editions of Book VI of "The Aeneid," the "Historia Langobardorum" of Paul the Deacon, and various parts of St Jerome's Latin version of The New Testament.
