What is the course about?
This course aims to build reading fluency in Latin through reading an original Latin text.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
This term we shall be continuing our translation of Seneca’s Phaedra. The recommended edition is by Coffey and Mayer (Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics).
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read and translate an original Latin text with confidence
- scan Seneca’s poetry.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course assumes a strong, comprehensive knowledge of Latin grammar and a good foundational vocabulary. Students will ideally have spent at least a term reading original Latin texts. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Students will be assigned passages to prepare for each class, during which there will be discussions on the language, style, themes, and historical background of the text. Homework: about two to three hours per week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Students will need the text. You can use any edition, but notes are useful.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Latin 5 next term.
