What is the course about?

The course aims to consolidate students’ knowledge of Latin grammar through close reading of original Latin texts.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

The course will focus on the work of one Classical author, and will include grammar review and literary analysis. The starting point will be confirmed by the tutor at the beginning of the course.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Approach original Latin texts with confidence
- Recognise and accurately translate complex grammatical structures
- Have an appreciation of Latin literature and its stylistic features.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course assumes a comprehensive knowledge of Latin grammar and a strong foundational Latin vocabulary. Students should have completed Latin 5 module 2 or have an equivalent knowledge.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Students will be assigned passages to prepare for each class, during which there will be in-depth discussions on its grammar as well as the language, themes, and historical background of the text. There will also be regular grammar review and composition exercises. Homework: about two to three hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students may use any edition they like of the Latin text, but an edition with commentary is recommended.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Latin 5.
