What is the course about?
The course aims to enable you to read straightforward Latin prose by gaining knowledge of the basic grammatical structures.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We shall be using material provided by the tutor (taken from the second edition of the Reading Latin CUP: you do not need to buy the book). Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. You will be studying the conjugation of verbs as well as the declension of nouns and adjectives.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- command a wider vocabulary
- demonstrate some knowledge of the structure of Latin
- have some insight into the derivation of English words
- have a greater appreciation of Latin comic style.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is for complete beginners, although you may like to join for revision purposes if you have some previous basic knowledge of Latin but consider yourself 'rusty'.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Whole class work. Translation, grammar instruction, grammar exercises. Homework will require approx. 1.5 hours per day.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The material taken from the Reading Latin, second edition, will be provided by the tutor. Bring pen and paper (or tablet).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Latin 1: module 1 in September. Please enrol as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
