According to the Mental Health Foundation, 1 in 4 people experience mental ill-health at some point in their lives. That's why the right support needs to be available to allow those with poor mental health to get back to being their best selves. This course is for people who want to find out more about mental health and well-being, in relation to their own mental health and others they may wish to support or work with. We highly recommend taking this course if you are thinking about applying for the understanding working in mental health course (KMA12). What is the course about?

Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. This course is designed to give you an understanding of mental health issues and the support available for individuals. You will also learn how to foster good mental health and well-being for yourself.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

There are four learning outcomes for this course. They are:
Understand what is meant by the terms ‘mental health’ and ‘wellbeing’.
Understand mental health issues in relation to diverse groups.
Know how to access support for mental health issues.
Know how to foster good mental health and wellbeing in self.

By the end of the course you will be able to explain the terms mental health and well-being. You will be able to describe the mental health issues faced by diverse groups, how to access support for mental health issues and how to meet your own mental health needs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a level 1 introductory course, requiring some assessment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a variety of ways to suit different learning styles. There will be group discussion, presentations, role play and practical work. You may also have visitors or watch videos.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No , but you will needs notepad and pen.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can apply for one of our level 1 or level 2 courses, including, understanding working in mental health.
