This course is for practitioners who work with clients or those with personal experience of drugs and substance misuse. This qualification enables the learner to develop a knowledge and understanding of substance misuse awareness - including alcohol - and its potential effects on individuals and others. What is the course about?

This course will provide an understanding of lifestyle choices and other factors that relate to, and impact on,
health and wellbeing. It provides learners with a greater awareness of substance misuse in the context of health and wellbeing whether in a personal, professional or voluntary capacity. This understanding could be applied in a variety of contexts such as work, education, leisure, and in the community. This course is designed to give you an understanding of the reasons, risks and support available to those who may be affected by drug and substance misuse.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

You will gain an understanding the use and misuse of legal and illegal drugs and other substances.
You will gain an understanding the risks of using and misusing drugs and other substances.
You will learn how to access sources of help/support relating to substance misuse.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

You will be able to describe reasons some people may misuse drugs and other substances. You will have an understanding of the risks involved and how and where to access support relating to substance misuse.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a level 1 introductory course, requiring some assessment. You will need to complete a literacy and digital assessment at a level 1 standard to complete this course. You will also need a laptop or PC to access the course materials and the zoom lessons.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a variety of ways to suit different learning styles. There will be group discussion, presentations, role play and practical work. You may also have visitors or watch videos.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no extra costs but you will need to bring a notepad and paper the lessons.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you have finished you can apply for one of the level 2 courses in the care and support area or other subject area.
