Level 2 award in youth work provides learners with the knowledge and skills they need to progress into a career in youth work practice. This qualification is designed for people who are already working in a youth work environment (public, voluntary or private sector, paid or unpaid) in an assisting or supportive role and who are supervised. What is the course about?

This qualification embraces the National Occupational Standards for youth work. It supports the skills and knowledge learners need to become a competent Assistant Youth Support Worker. Learners will complete this qualification with a concrete understanding of the following:

The key purpose and role of youth work including the skills, knowledge, qualities and values required to practice
Safeguarding in a youth work setting, including how to protect young people when using contemporary technologies
Young people’s development and how youth work can support young people during adolescence.

What will we cover?

You will cover four units:
Theory of Youth Work
Safeguarding in a youth work setting
Young People’s Development
Engaging and Communicating with Young People.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of this course you should have a solid understanding of; the key purpose and role of youth work including the skills, knowledge, qualities and values required to practice
Safeguarding in a youth work setting, including how to protect young people when using contemporary technologies
Young people’s development and how youth work can support young people during adolescence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a level 2 course and you will need to take a literacy assessment to a level 1 standard. You will also need sufficient digital skills, so that you can produce coursework assignments and use the online platforms provided. During classes you will be taking part in discussions and contributing to group tasks. You will need to have excellent attendance and reliability.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lessons will be delivered in a variety of ways. We are keen to create a learning community on our courses so we encourage collaborative thinking and sharing ideas. You will be set individual and group tasks to work on. You will use online learning out of class to prepare for lessons. You may be asked to present your ideas to the group. There will be a substantial amount of coursework to complete. You should dedicate at least 3 hours of learning outside of the classroom per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs. You will need a note pad and pens to take notes.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you have finished you may apply for other courses at City lit. You could also apply for paid or voluntary roles in youth work. This qualification will support you to apply for assistance youth support worker roles.
