What is the course about?

This is a one-off free taster session to give you an idea of what happens in a lipreading class. The class will be a fun and relaxed group where you will practise a few lipreading activities with the teacher and with the other people in the group. There will be no more than 12 in the class, so it’s an informal and unthreatening environment in which to have a go. If you enjoy the class, you can discuss course options with the tutor at the end. This course is for those who use spoken English as their main means of communication (- not BSL users).

The class is taught live on Zoom.
To access the live class you will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook). Please note a tablet or smart phone is not suitable for this class. The screen size is too small. It will limit your ability to lipread and participate fully in class.
We will contact you by email with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- Learn about some sounds which can be seen, but which look alike - and why
- Find out about other skills used to lipread: e.g. context and facial expression
- Practise lipreading some simple sentences.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- have an awareness of factors involved in lipreading
- know about the sorts of activities you would do in one of our lipreading classes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will have an acquired hearing loss and use spoken English to communicate with others.
Straightforward written sentences are used in exercises and on the board to confirm spoken words. No previous experience of lipreading is necessary.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In class there will be group work, pair work, practical work, lecture, demonstration and discussion.

This will be taught online with live streaming.

We aim to make all our lipreading teaching accessible for students with an acquired hearing loss, whether it is an online course or face to face.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no materials or extra costs. You will find it helpful to bring a pen, notebook and A4 folder for handouts.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to move on to one of our ‘Lipreading and managing hearing loss’ classes. You may also be interested in our short courses such as ‘Assertiveness and hearing loss’ and ‘Alexander Technique workshop for hard of hearing people’. The tutor can advise you at the end of your course.

We’re sorry. We don’t have a bio ready for the tutor of this class at the moment, but we’re working on it! Watch this space.
