What is the course about?
An exploration of the various villages which are the heart of London's quartiers.
This course will be delivered online and in person, and will involve tutor presentation and class discussion. Student preparation and homework outside class times is strongly encouraged. To fully participate in this online class you will need:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer/laptop/tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably google chrome). Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.
What will we cover?
If London is made up of a collection of villages, at its heart are the quartiers: Soho, St. James, Covent Garden, Spitalfields, Bloomsbury, Mayfair, Clerkenwell, St James’s- whose characters and appearances are quite distinct even today. This course explores the historical reasons for this in terms of the origin of the quartier, and the people who have lived there over the centuries - and seeks to explain each quartier's unique character.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Identify the origins of each quartier
- Explain the forces that have shaped the character of each quartier.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for anyone who is interested in London’s history. Please bring suitable clothing for a walking tours in London during January and February.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
After the 1st session delivered by Zoom all other sessions will be guided walks.
