What is the course about?
This is an introductory course to laser cutting and its potential for various practical outcomes. We will use Adobe Illustrator to create or customise a simple template, and leave with a ring of your own design to take away. All materials included. Suitable for absolute beginners.
What will we cover?
- Basic drawing and image tracing techniques in Adobe Illustrator
- Designing and personalising jewellery
- Saving digital files for laser cutting
- Laser cutting and finishing jewellery designs.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Use various tools in Adobe Illustrator
- Design and customize a simple ring
- Gain an understanding of the laser cutting process
More experienced learners:
- create their own shape instead of working from a template
- produce more than 1 product (additional fees apply).
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for absolute beginners. No previous experience necessary although if you are familiar with Adobe Illustrator you can use the time to build on your basic knowledge.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This is a punchy tutor lead workshop. Your will primarily work alone on your own file, with opportunity to share and discuss ideas with you peers throughout. There will be opportunity for discussion and idea sharing as the course progresses. No work is required outside of class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
If you wish to cut more than one item there will be a charge of £4 per item (including finding). Additional cuts may not be possible within the course duration and should be negotiated with the tutor after class.

Emilia Sutherland Netto is the designer and maker behind the jewellery brand Ember & Ore. Emilia has a BA Hons Contemporary Crafts degree from Plymouth College of Art. She has worked in the jewellery indiustry sinse 2012 in various manufacturing capacities and has taught jewellery making since 2013. More recently she has obtained two diplomas in CAD/CAM with an emphasis on jewellery manufacture.Emilia believes in using a mixture of modern and traditional manufacture and design techniques in order to achieve highly detailed and sculptural outcomes.
