Composer of over 450 films, Ennio Morricone’s soundtracks combined electric guitars, panpipes, whistling and orchestrations with natural sound to reinvent the sound of cinema. This course will look at Morricone’s techniques and creative relationships with Italian directors including Leone, Pasolini and Tornatore plus also his memorable film scores for films including The Mission, The Untouchables and The Hateful Eight.

What is the course about?

What makes a memorable film score? Ennio Morricone understood how to blend music with the moving image in order to heighten the cinematic experience. By examining a selection of his film scores we will discover the techniques he employed to achieve his art.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Analysing Morricone’s work, we will look at his collaborative relationships with a diverse range of European and Hollywood directors, paying close attention to Morricone’s signature style, use of classical motifs and musical punctuation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Have a better understanding of the background and the techniques employed by Morricone to create his film scores.
-Further develop skills of analysis and interpretation to your own wider film knowledge.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory level course aimed at building appreciation skills of the work of a film composer. It is also suitable for all who enjoying viewing and discussing film.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be short introductory talks by the tutor, group discussion and screenings of extracts from a variety of films scored by Morricone will be included for film analysis.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring paper and a pen for notetaking. The tutor will provide all materials.
