What is the course about?
- Improving your observational skills to assist identifying plants using plant material in the classroom and plants in situ
- The usefulness of putting plants into groups
- Understanding common and botanical plant names and why it matters

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Be more confident in observing plants,their characteristic features and using reference material as an aid
- Correctly write and interpret botanical plant names and understand their benefits compared with common
names.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
An interest and enthusiasm for plants and an open mind will be helpful, whether you are new to plants or have done a previous course. This is a botanical not a horticultural course and you do not need to be a gardener or have a garden to enjoy it.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This is a very hands-on course. There will be a mixture of interactive sessions in pairs/group work, talks and practical activities in the classroom and afternoon walks in Lincoln’s Inn Fields nearby.
Your tutor, Letta Jones (MA),
Letta Jones, MA, is a Lecturer in Horticulture and Garden History. She taught at Capel Manor and Birkbeck
Colleges for 15 years and is now a tutor at City Lit and the Chelsea Physic Garden. Her out of London courses are run at the Glenthorne Centre, Claridge House and Holehird, for the Lakeland Horticultural Society.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring strong, non slip walking shoes, waterproof and warm clothes as the afternoon walks take place whatever the weather. You need to be able to stand for 15-20 mins and be comfortable being in the outdoors.

Letta Jones, MA, is a Lecturer in Horticulture and Garden History. She taught at Capel Manor College and and Birkbeck, University of London for 15 years. She now teaches classes at the City Lit, Marlborough College Summer School, Woodbrooke,Denman, Glenthorne and Knuston Hall. She is part of the Garden History Grapevine/Gardens Trust group which offers introductory and advanced courses in garden history www.gardenhistorygrapevine.wordpress.com. A guide at the Chelsea Physic Garden for 18 years, Letta now teaches on their education programme. She is a Green Flag Park judge and she also leads her own garden study tours abroad.
