What is the course about?
Uncover creative ways of making a collection of observational drawings in an A3 sketchbook. Each week you will look at a different object or group of objects, and draw using a variety of dry drawing media, recreating the expericne of working in a museum. You will sit with sketchbooks and discuss/curate objects in a group/pairs, before examining them with a range of drawing methods and techniques.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Session 1: Clothes. Highlights from your collection drawn in different ways. Folded, scrunched, hung up. Colour.
Session 2: Objects from a drawer or shelf sorted into categories. Dark and light, reduction drawing.
Session 3: Museum of food - items from fridge or cupboard drawn considering texture.
Other sessions will cover: favourite things, surrealist drawing exercises, kitchen objects, shoes, natural history items.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Draw in a sketchbook with pencils, using line, tone, hatching, texture, reduction.
- Make representational studies using collage, rubbings, ink, wax resist, colour, pen.
- Develop sustained drawings individually and quicker ones as part of a series.
- Discuss the role of collections and museums, and how they shape society and identity.
- Assemble collections of objects and consider how they relate to each other.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is designed for all levels of experience.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Learners will be expected to look at images, videos and links posted on the shared Google Classroom. Full details of this will be provided on enrolment and a reminder email sent out 3 days before the course starts. You’ll be asked to find and collect everyday objects to draw from, and will be guided to find new ways of looking at, and drawing them. You are welcome to continue drawing in the sketchbook between classes, and advice will be given on continuation activities, however there will be no formal homework.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Your collection fo drawing will be documented in an A3 sized sketchbook. You will need 2B and 4B pencils, coloured pencils, a pen, oil pastels and a glue stick.
- You will be taught using Zoom for the live sessions with your tutor. You will receive an email before your session starts with details of the live session link. Please be aware you will need to check your email address associated with your account.
- We use Google Classroom E-learning platform which will store all tasks/notes/resources/ demo videos You will need to login into our Google classroom before each sessions starts.
- You will need a computer or laptop. Ideally with a fully updated google Chrome browser.
- Using headphones with microphones will block out all room noise in sessions.
- If you are using a tablet or mobile device you will need a microphone, and optionally a camera.
- You will require a good broadband connection as mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle will not provide sufficient Bandwidth for live sessions.
